Can You Get Genital Herpes If You Wear a Condom and the Person Has No Outbreaks?

Author: Natalia Harrison

If you are sexually intimate with a person who has herpes simplex II, or genital herpes there are a few things that you should know about herpes transmission.

The herpes simplex viruses are transmitted through skin to skin contact. It is not a blood borne virus, it lays dormant in the nervous system, and when it is triggered it rises to the surface. This is known as a herpes outbreak. Genital herpes outbreaks can look like anything from puss filled sores, to small open wounds. They can occur inside the vagina, on the scrotum, pelvis, the inner thigh, buttocks or lower back. Herpes sores can be big enough to see visibly, but they can also be be small as a pin point and barely noticeable to the human eye.

Now that you understand what a genital herpes outbreak is and the ways it can appear - you should realize that the answer to your question is simply yes - you can still get herpes even if you wear a condom and the person has no visible signs of an outbreak.

If you are in a relationship with a person who has genital herpes and are considering being sexually intimate with them, it is important for you to have a honest discussion about what types of medications they take. While condoms can reduce your risk, it is not a fool proof method of prevention. In order to protect yourself, your partner should commit to taking daily suppressive therapy like Valtrex. Studies have shown that using condoms combined with daily suppressive therapy will reduce your risk to under two to five percent.

Can you get genital herpes from a cold sore?
I’ve heard from some people that you can get genital herpes via oral sex after having a cold sore and I’ve heard from others that you can’t becuase they’re different strans of herpes. But let’s say someone performs oral sex and gets a cold sore a couple days later, should the person who received the oral sex be concerned about getting genital herpes?

There are indeed two strains of herpes. HSV1, which “prefers” the mouth but can infect the genitals, and HSV2, which “prefers” the genitals but can infect the mouth.

Herpes is spread through skin-to-skin contact – so basically kissing for oral-to-oral transmission, genital sex for genital-to-genital transmission, and oral sex for oral-to-genital or genital-to-oral transmission.

The best site that I know for info about oral herpes is below.

      Good luck.

Can you contract genital herpes from cold sores by touching?
Hello. I have been doing research and went down to the clinic today to ask about this, but I would like to know what everyone else thinks. I am starting to see my ex again, after a year of us being broken up and I know a lot can change in a year. I asked him multiple times if he had/has cold sores, herpes, etc, just to be safe (we did not have sex and I was not planning on having sex, just making out). He said no, he doesn’t have anything, but he touched the inside of his top lip a few times (which was why I asked him that question). I would hope he’s not lying about having cold sores or anything and I know that he (as well as anybody) could be carriers without even knowing it. So, my question is: say that he DID have a cold sore or IS a carrier of herpes and touched his lip, then a few hours later, touched my vagina; how likely do you think the chances of me getting genital herpes are? I know that anytime you have sex, a sexual encounter, etc you are at risk for a lot of things, I’m not stupid, but I just want to know what everyone’s opinions are. The clinic said that it would probably be about 2 weeks before I would see a breakout and that the test can’t really tell (this early on), so I did not get the herpes test. Also, should I get the HPV shot when I go in for my annual exam in a few weeks, even if I DO have herpes? I just want to be and stay safe and just see what everyone thinks. Thanks!

if you touched your mouth while you had a cold sore and then your lower area shall i say, can you transmit the disease?

    • LINDSEY S says:

It’s possible, but you would have to touch a cold sore then with in seconds touch your genitals. The herpes virus dies very quickly once it’s exposed to open air. You would be more likely to get it down stairs if you let some one with a old sore give you oral sex. But if you all ready have cold sores then you would be less likely to get reinfected any where else.

What is the exact chance of getting genital herpes from touching your lip’s cold sore and then your genitals?
What are the actual chances of getting genital herpes from touching your cold sore and then touching genitals?

I would like to know what the actual chances of getting genital herpes are if you have a cold sore on your lip (Herpes Type 1), touch it, and then touch your own genitalia. Anyone who can provide a link with actual statistics on this exact topic will get 10 points on the spot. It seems like, while the risk is there, there is less chance with this than with, say, oral sex.

Please don’t send me some link saying “you can get genital herpes from touching cold sores”….everyone knows that there is that chance. I am wondering what the exact chances of getting it are from touching the sore by mistake and then touching your genitalia.

    Thanks.

I think that if u have a the chances r rather high. (The virus is highly contagious when fever blisters are present. It is spread by kissing. Children become infected by contact with someone who has a fever blister and then they spread the virus by rubbing their cold sore and touching other children. A person with fever blisters should be careful not to touch the blisters and spread the virus to new sites, such as the eyes or genitals.) This was taken from medicinenet.com. Hope it helps. Now can I pls have my 10 points??????????????? This was the best site i found on the subject. There where no % given in any site.SORRY

There will be no site that says the exact number for that because many people dont know how they got genital herpes. I can give my own opinion and you can accept it or leave it. If you touch a cold sore then touch your genitals without washing your hands then I would say the chances of getting it is pretty high. If your hand doesn’t go exactly on the sore but just barely skims over it or hardly touches it, then I would say the chances are much less than the other way. I’m sorry I couldn’t answer your question exactly because there is not good enough information to do that. I hope this answer helps you.
